Overall Position Statement

 

Overall Role

 

The Electorate Officer (EO) works with a small team of staff to support the work of the Local Member of Parliament.

 

Duties

 

The key duty of the position is to deal with matters raised by constituents, community groups and other organisations within the electorate.  Generally, the EO will deal with the more complex matters requiring a great deal of communication and liaising with other spheres of government and agencies.  Some case work will involve interaction with the private sector.

 

The EO will also attend a range of community meetings and, from time to time, represent the Local Member at various community Forums.

 

The EO will contribute to a range of other activities tasks as the Office places a strong emphasis of service and communicating with the Community.

 

Skills

 

The position requires the successful application to have outstanding communication, negotiation and problem solving skills. The EO will regularly be dealing with people who are aggrieved at some decision made so you will need the skills to deal with quite challenging behaviours.  The person will need good team skills to be productive.

 

The workloads in the office are at a constantly high level so the EO must be able to manage multiple tasks and have the ability to prioritise work flows.

 

The EO will be able to use the Microsoft suite of computer applications.

 

Knowledge

 

The EO must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the workings of government and our parliamentary system. A basic understanding of administrative law principles (rights of administrative review) will be highly regarded.

 

 

Experience

 

Relevant experience in any sphere of government while not mandatory will be highly regarded.  In the absence of experience in government an appropriate background in problem resolution or community development would likely provide the person with the necessary skill set.

 

The ability to interpret laws or regulations to a working knowledge level would be necessary to perform in this position to an acceptable standard.

 

Commitment to Service

 

The EO will be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to service, and be able to deal with people in a respectful manner.  The position requires extensive interaction with people with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, so the EO must be able to demonstrate empathy to individual constituent’s circumstances.

 

Confidentiality

 

The Office often deals with personal and highly sensitive information, so the EO must at all times maintain a very high standard of confidentiality.

 

Reporting Lines

 

The EO is directly responsible to the Local Member and is expected to play a mentoring role to the other two staff in the Office.

 

Hours of Work

 

The position is offered on a fulltime basis but may be available on a part—time basis if suitable sharing arrangements can be negotiated with two candidates who meet the criteria to a high standard.

 

This position does require work to be performed outside normal office hours including weekends.

 

National Police Clearance Certificate

 

The EO must produce a PCC that has no notations that would compromise their ability to discharge their duties to a high standard or undermine the integrity of the Office.

 

Driver’s License

 

The EO will need to hold a Driver’s License.

 

Justice of the Peace

 

The EO will already be, or be prepared to become a Justice of the Peace.
