Cruel Marshall Liberal Budget Hits The Poor And Vulnerable

The Marshall Liberal Government’s cruel first budget has cuts to vital services, while offering tax cuts to millionaires.

Despite rolling in increased GST revenue, the Marshall Government has cut vital health and education services, and punished our community’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged, with cuts to employment services, public transport routes, and increased rental charges for public housing tenants.

Local Member of Parliament, Tony Piccolo, is outraged at a budget which he says reveals the Marshall Government’s perverse priorities, and poor economic strategy.

“Many vulnerable older and less physically able residents of Gawler and Munno Para rely upon bus routes which link them to shops, health facilities, and the Adelaide Metro train line,” Mr Piccolo said.

“Given that the Liberal Party have previously referred to these bus routes as failures, I call upon the Marshall Government to rule out cutting them, as part of the cuts to bus routes announced in the Budget.”

“Many public housing tenants will also be put under strain as a greater proportion of their pensions, welfare benefits and wages will be taken in increased rental charges.

“And this coincides with reductions in land tax rates, including for those with property portfolios valued up to $5 million.

“The pain in this budget is in the detail and the full negative impact on the Light Electorate won’t be known until it is scrutinised during the parliamentary estimates process.

“This line by line scrutiny of the budget will expose the broken promises, hype and sheer nastiness of the budget.”

Mr Piccolo is also critical of the Marshall Government’s ineffective economic strategy.

“It is shameful that in the wake of Holden’s closure in October last year, the Marshall Government has cut the Small Business Development Fund, which had been designed to assist expanding small businesses and start-ups,” Mr Piccolo said.

“The Small Business Development Fund was funded by the previous State Labor Government to aid the economic diversification of the northern suburbs.

“It is a disgrace that a Government which likes to brag about its commitment to small business and entrepreneurialism, has cut a program specifically designed to assist small businesses.

“Cutting this program will stifle the economic transformation underway in the northern suburbs.”
