Gawler's Farmers' Market To Return

At the announcement were from left were Market spokesperson, Andrew Frangos, local Member of Parliament, Tony Piccolo, Steven Frangos and Anesti Frangos.

A farmers market is set to return to Gawler in the visitor centre car park early in the New Year with the Gawler Council giving it the green light last week.

The Frangos family from Virginia have taken over the management of the market with plans to provide a wider range of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Market spokesperson, Mr Andrew Frangos, said the new market would have a wider range of fresh fruit and vegetables and other locally produced food products.

“We aim to give local growers and food producers an opportunity to sell direct to the customer and improve farm gate returns,” said Mr Frangos.

“Customers will also be able to buy fresh products either grown or produced locally, in South Australia, or Australia depending on the seasons.

“We will focus on fresh products, so we need to source them from different parts of the state and Australia according to seasonal growing patterns.

“We will strive to provide a consistent level of service and product availability, at affordable prices.

“Having grown up in the region, we are keen to serve our community,” added Mr Frangos.

The proposal has the support of local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo, who successfully put their case for the market at a November Council meeting.

Mr Piccolo told the council: “All stall holders will be owner-operated and reflect mum and dad small businesses.”

“The new market will include more affordable produce and stall holders will be required to be present at every market.”

“These two minor, but important operational matters, are likely to make the market more successful.”

“One stall will also be reserved (at no charge) for local service clubs and community groups to provide catering, with all proceeds being retained by the club.”

Mr Piccolo said: “Farmers markets are not only important to give growers a better return and enable customers to buy direct, they also play an important social role by helping build a sense of community.”

The new market commences at 8 am on Saturday 12th January 2019 in the Gawler Visitor Centre Carpark.
