LIBERALS TO DE-RAIL BAROSSA RAIL PROTECTION BILL

The Marshall Liberal Government is set to derail moves to protect the Barossa rail corridor from further destruction.

During the week the Marshall Liberal Government advised State Parliament that they would oppose and defeat the Barossa Rail Corridor Rail Protection Bill introduced by local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo.

The Bill was introduced as a ‘holding measure’ to protect the rail corridor from further destruction which could jeopardise any future return of tourism rail services to the Barossa.

Mr Piccolo said the Marshall Liberal Government’s response is extremely disappointing and reflects their disregard for people and businesses in the Barossa that rely on tourism for their livelihood.

“It appears that Marshall Liberal Government first decided to oppose the proposal, and then went searching for reasons to justify their action,” said Mr Piccolo.

“While the decision is in itself very disappointing and short-sighted, the conduct of the debate by the Marshall Liberal Government displayed their contempt for the Barossa community.”

“The government used the limited time available for debate to deliver a barrage of personal attacks on me, then filibustered to ensure the Bill was not fully debated and decided.”

“It is clear from the debate there will be no opportunity to revive a tourism train service for the Barossa if the Liberals are re-elected at 2022 state election.”

Late last year Mr Piccolo established a task force to develop a project brief for an independent feasibility study to be undertaken by an incoming Labor Government should they be elected in 2022.

The task force comprises key tourism, business and community leaders from the Barossa and Gawler regions to explore the scope of a feasibility study to inquire into the costs and benefits of getting a Barossa tourism train back on track.

Mr Piccolo said the Marshall Liberal Government’s decision to block his Bill does not mark the end of the line for the task force.

“While having the protections in place would have been helpful, the project can continue,” said Mr Piccolo.

“While the current Liberal Member for the Barossa views about the support for a full and independent feasibility study are well known, the people of the Barossa have right to know what the Liberal Member in waiting views are.”
