A disability employment seminar was held earlier tonight to mark the 2018 International Day of People with Disability and help young people living with disability find meaning work.

Ten local service providers distributed information to families to assist people living with disability or their families or carers gain a better understanding of the training and employment options and opportunities available.

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo said many families attended the seminar and were able to gain insights in the training and employment opportunities for young people living with disability.

“People living with disability have a right to live a dignified life and be treated with dignity and that includes being able to undertake work which is meaningful to them,” said Mr Piccolo.

“Sadly, in many cases people living with disability are performing work below their capabilities.

“People living with disability have a range of abilities and there is the right job for them in our community.

“We need employers to keep an open mind when it comes to employing people living with disability.”

“Additional training opportunities exist to help people living with disability to gain the skills required to compete on the open employment market.”

Mr Piccolo said that Feros Care, who work on behalf of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), provided an overview of the employment elements of the NDIS and how various programs are designed to assist people living with disability enter the workforce.

“Enabling people living with disability find meaningful work is about developing important life skills, gaining independence, new opportunities for social interaction and just simply, living a dignified life.”

Mr Piccolo said that if any family is seeking information and advice about the employment options available to people living with disability they can contact his office on 85 222878 and they will be happy to provide contact details of the various service providers.
