In a South Australian first, the Light Electorate Office has become a South Australian Living Artists (SALA) venue for the August 2016 festival. Member for Light, Mr Tony Piccolo said the initiative had come about as a result of his interest in both history and art. The Light Electorate exhibition has a political theme to it, with a number of politicians and would-be politicians ‘framed’ for the occasion. Mr Piccolo said the exhibition reflects the broad political personalities that have made a contribution to political life since the Electorate was first created in 1857. The exhibition is based on a “political portraits” theme, namely portraits of political personalities associated with the electorate over time. Portraits on exhibit include: Jeanette Elizabeth Davis (first female candidate), Norm Makin MP (First Australian Ambassador to the USA), John (Jack) Stephen Clark MP (Former Gawler PriMary School teacher) Dr Horace Lamb MP (a rogue with a chequered history) Dr Bruce Eastick AM (Former Gawler Mayor and MP) and, Sid McHugh MP (First ALP MP for Light and Wakefield) “This will be a very unique exhibition and I understand it will be the first of its type in South Australia,” Mr Piccolo said. The exhibition will run for two weeks in the Light Electorate Office from Monday 1st to Friday 12 August 2016 and is open to the public Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by Gawler artist and cartoonist George Aldridge on Sunday 31st July at 2pm. The portraits are not necessarily of elected members but include people who have made a contribution to political life or debate in the electorate over time. Mr Piccolo said “we aimed to exhibit portraits of people who have been trailblazers or unique in some way.” “For example, Dr Horace Dean was elected on 9 March 1857 subsequently unseated, re-elected and unseated again, and some years later, he repeated the exercise in New South Wales,” Mr Piccolo said. Mr Piccolo extended his thanks to the volunteers at Willo’s Men’s Shed and the Gawler Community Gallery who have assisted him in addressing the various logistics issues associated with holding an exhibition.
