The Gawler Council has joined forces with local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo to strengthen his call for the upgrading of the Tulloch/Main North Road intersection to be included in the State Budget, which will be handed down in late June. Gawler Mayor Karen Redman has requested Mr Piccolo’s assistance in seeking further State Government funding for the implementation of a suitable upgrade to the Tulloch Road intersection as part of the Gawler East Link Road project. Mayor Redman recently wrote to Mr Piccolo stating that while Council appreciated the major upgrade of the Potts/Main North Road intersection as part of the Gawler East Link Road intersection, 140 metres north was one of Gawler’s most significant traffic issues. “Whilst this investment [in the Potts Road intersection] is needed to ensure that growth of our Town is sustainably managed, no more than 140m north of this intersection on Main North Road is one of the most significant traffic management issues in the town,” Mayor Redman said. “This intersection has a poor existing service level (i.e. queues and waiting times) and serves the main arterial road connection from a large commercial and educational precinct in Evanston. “This poor service level will only diminish further over time as Gawler continues to grow. “The Gawler community continues to seek resolution from both the Council and the State Government to invest in an upgrade of this intersection,” she said. Mr Piccolo said he welcomed the support from the Gawler Council, as it strengthened his requests to secure the funding. “I am pleased that the Council acknowledges that it should work with the State Government to address this pressing traffic issue for our town,” Mr Piccolo said. “While the Council and State Government should not have allowed the issue to reach this point, I welcome Council’s support and will work closely with the Mayor to get this intersection upgraded urgently,” he said.
