Evanston Park residents, whose homes abut the under-construction Gawler East Link Road, are angry at the huge amount of dust emanating from the worksite.
Residents say they accept that from time to time it may be difficult to control dust caused by construction works. But, since work commenced in late-November last year on the Gawler East Link Road, residents claim to have put up with huge amounts of dust entering their homes and air conditioner systems on a daily basis.
Having been rebuffed by the Gawler Council, some residents have sought the assistance of Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo.
Mr Piccolo said the major issue appears to emanate from the mounds of soil which have been put aside for later reuse.
“While residents were prepared to accept some inconvenience, they believe the Government could do a better job of ensuring the contractors use dust suppressant measures, to ensure that dust is kept to a minimum,” Mr Piccolo said.
Residents Mrs Sue and Mr Marco Longo said that their Christmas/New Year period was ruined, as they had to cancel family events at their home because of the dust.“The dust has been unbearable since the covering vegetation has been removed,” Mr and Mrs Longo said.
Neighbours Mr Robin and Mrs Heather Blown said that they could not use their air conditioner on very hot days because dust has entered the filters and they need to keep their windows closed.
“The dust has just been shocking,” Mr and Mrs Blown said. Mr Piccolo has also received a number complaints from residents in the adjoining The Vines retirement village.
Mr Piccolo said that he wrote to the Transport Minister, the Hon Stephan Knoll MP, some months ago drawing his attention to concerns residents have with dust and noise during the construction of the Link Road.
“The Minister gave an assurance that measures would be put in place to protect residents,” Mr Piccolo said.
“It’s unfortunate that that promise has not been kept.
“The residents do not oppose the construction of the Link Road but ask that contractors take reasonable measures to control the dust.” Mr Piccolo said he was disappointed that the Gawler Council has not been prepared to go into bat for the local residents.
“While the Council are not responsible for the construction of the road, they could nevertheless advocate on behalf of their local residents.”Mr Piccolo said he would again contact the Minister to ensure the issue is addressed as soon as possible.
