The Wasleys Bowling Clubrooms, rebuilt because of extensive damage caused by the Pinery 2015 fires, were officially re-opened yesterday.
In officially re-opening the new clubrooms, Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo said the determination to re-establish the clubrooms, so it can play a role in the recovery of the wider community, shows great guts and dignity by club members.
“In many ways, tragedy has shown us how wonderful humanity can be and how together, we are stronger,” said Mr Piccolo.
“It is humbling to see the resilience of the Wasleys community.”
“This team spirit, which has seen the community rally together to rebuild Wasleys only sporting clubroom, is nothing short of incredible.
“Club members have shown the same true grit that the founding members of the Club did back in 1935 when the club was first officially opened.”
Mr Piccolo quoted from a story appearing on page 2 of the Friday 13 September 1935 edition of the Bunyip that reported on the pending opening of the clubrooms.
The original clubrooms were officially opened on the last Sunday in December in 1935 by the (then) President, Mr Albert Selleck.
Mr. A. A. Seibert offered a suitable block of land on very easy terms, and this led to the creation of the club and work started during July 1934 to lay the first green.
Mr Piccolo said that the Bunyip reported, “A busy bee was called and 29 men assembled with various implements, including a tractor.”
“Broken down fences and sheds and huge Boxthorn all went, and by 5 o'clock the block had been cleared, plowed and fenced.”
“There was then a lot of work to be done; grading, loam and grass had to be carted from Gawler River, and Broom-bush had to be cut and conveyed from Williamstown.”
“This spirt showed itself in 2016 when, in a time of great challenge, the Club triumphed to win the Men’s pennant.”
“With the official opening of the rebuilt clubroom, we can appreciate and celebrate a closer community.”
Mr Piccolo said he was truly honoured to be present and be invited to unveil the official opening plaque.
“I wish to extend my sincere congratulations and admiration for the dedication you have shown throughout the recovery and rebuilding process.”
“I look forward to seeing the positive impact this will now have on the local community and region.”
