The Gawler Central’s Sporting Club has officially opened its new clubrooms.

Gawler Mayor, Karen Redman and Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo jointly unveiled a plaque commemorating the official opening at a recently held ceremony.

The State Government contributed to $20,000 through the Active Club program to the total cost of the project’s budget of $72,500.

Mr Piccolo said while the grant helped fill a funding gap, it was the 1,700 hours of volunteer work that ensured the project’s success.

“Although a number of people were involved in the project, the driving force was Association Vice President, Mr Mark Hermann,” Mr Piccolo said.

“Sport and recreation plays an important role in our lives, for many reasons, and for many people a club becomes their second home.

“This project has redeveloped the old Gawler Greyhound Club ‘Dog Box’ into the new ‘Tiger Lair’ that will benefit the whole community.

“People who undertake volunteering work like this build more than a facility, they help build a community and a strong sense of belonging.

“Many future generations of young sportspeople will benefit from the contribution by this group of volunteers led by Mr Mark Hermann.

“Sporting clubs are a meeting spot, a social hub, and often the heartbeat of the local community.”

“I understand the Town of Gawler generously provided the Club with an interest-free loan of $20,000 to assist in the redevelopment of this project,” he said.

The Club was recently successful in securing $150,000 through the State Government’s Fund My Neighbourhood program to construct their ‘Grandstand Shelter Project’.

This will be another significant facility for the Club and will reap huge benefits for its players and the wider community going forward.Mr Piccolo said that he applauded everyone involved in bringing this project to fruition.
