The Zonta Club of Gawler celebrated their 30th birthday with a dinner at Nixon’s Function Centre on Saturday night.

Over 60 guests heard about the history of the club, and the work the club undertakes to advance the interests of women and girls locally and across the world.

Charter member Val Mew talked about why she joined Zonta, the various activities they have undertaken over the past 30 years, and how membership of the club has made her a more confident person.

The most recent member, Gillian Logan who joined the club in early 2022, talked about how her membership of Zonta was helping with her research of how health services are perceived by residents in the Pt Lincoln and surrounding areas.

The event which was also attended by Zonta members from other clubs viewed a pictorial history of the club during the night.

Locally, Zonta have undertaken a number of projects and are well known for their campaigns to increase awareness of the impact that family violence has on women and children.

This campaign culminates in the 16 days of activism. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

More recently, in conjunction with the Gawler Domestic Violence Network the club has supported the creation of a commemorative space dedicated to the courage of those women who have suffered from domestic violence and abuse.

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo who attended the 30th birthday celebrations said Zonta provided itself in supporting women and girls around the world through “service and advocacy”.

“Their service program includes birthing kits, boxes of love, and breast care cushions,” said Mr Piccolo.

“The local Zonta Club also provide STEM scholarships to young women, and recognise and celebrate the achievements of young women, through Women of Achievement Awards.”
