Mark Oliphant College student, James Larsson, has become the first South Australian Junior Ambassador for the Fred Hollows Humanity Awards at a ceremony held this morning.

Fred Hollows’ name is synonymous with caring.

Fred Hollows believed the basic attribute of humankind is to look after each other.

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo said the award recognises Year 6 students who are making a positive contribution to their community.

“It celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their lives, as Dr Hollows did,” said Mr Piccolo.

His teacher, Ms Larissa Schinella who said James shows compassion, integrity and kindness every day, nominated James.

“A student in our class, Alex, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. James is an amazing friend to Alex, and supports him with his movement around the school and his learning,” Ms Schinella said. “James will often take time out of his day to ensure that Alex is comfortable and happy.

“James is particularly kind during PE lessons, when he ensures Alex is able to participate by playing modified games with him

“James’ selflessness and compassion is inspiring,” she said.

James received his award from Premier Jay Weatherill and Gabi Hollows at a State Presentation Ceremony at Parliament House.

When Mr Piccolo learnt of James’ Award, he took the opportunity to personally congratulate him.

“It is clear that James embodies the values of the late Fred Hollows, and he is a credit to himself, family, school and the community.
