Local Member of Parliament, Tony Piccolo’s electorate office is once again a South Australian Living Artists (SALA) venue for the August 2022 festival, with the art of young people taking pride of place.

The exhibition in the LEO* gallery is showcasing art from local colleges, Gawler and District, Riverbanks, Mark Oliphant, and Trinity.

In officially opening the exhibition, Mr Piccolo said we should not underestimate the importance of art if we are to strive for civil society.

“Artists have unique insights into our society and their work reflects the things they hear, see and feel,” said Mr Piccolo.

“Artists often present us with a picture of society which challenges us, and that is important.”

“It is great that local schools are developing the creative skills of our young people.”

The LEO gallery is giving young people an opportunity to showcase their work to the general community.

The exhibition involves 52 pieces of artwork by young people in the local community, including line drawings, watercolours, photography, ceramics and traditional paintings.

The theme for the exhibition is “Light through Young Eyes”.

Mr Piccolo said the artwork was of a very high standard and reflected issues and views of local young people in our community.

“Paradoxically, art is a very powerful way of expression but is also a window into the heart and mind of the artist, which can be challenging for them.”

Young people were invited to submit works of art, in any medium, of how they see any aspect of our community or things that inspire them.

“It is interesting to see how young people, through both their innocence and experience, see the local community,” said Mr Piccolo.

The exhibition will run until the 31st   of August and can be viewed 9am-5 pm, Monday to Friday at Mr Piccolo’s electorate office at 148 Murray Street, Gawler and admission is free.

*The LEO gallery is located within the Light Electorate Office and holds regular exhibitions showcasing the work of young people throughout the Light electorate.
