Leader of the Opposition, Mr Peter Malinauskas MP, has praised the work of Dalkeith Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteers during a visit to the station last night.

Mr Malinauskas was very happy to accept the invitation by the volunteers to visit the local brigade. Mr Malinauskas was accompanied by local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo and Playford City Councillor, Akram Arifi.

During the visit, Mr Malinauskas met with the new brigade cadets, presented 10-year service certificates to three volunteers and heard about some of the resourcing challenges facing the volunteer-based service. Mr Malinauskas said it was an honour to present three of Dalkeith CFS finest with their ten-year service medals last night.

“The horrific bushfires have shone a light on the selfless efforts of our CFS volunteers,” said Mr Malinauskas. “But our State’s firies work all year-round and continuously put their lives on the line to keep us safe.”

“This station alone responds to upwards of 400 calls a year, which is a reflection of the commitment and passion these volunteers have to serve our community”

Mr Piccolo said he spoke with several local volunteers who had served not only in local fires and other incidents, but also fought the fires on Kangaroo Island and in New South Wales.

“These firies do an amazing job in helping keep our community safe and symbolise the best of Australian culture, where you look out for your neighbours, irrespective of how far away they are,” said Mr Piccolo.

The Dalkeith CFS has recently commenced a cadet program at the brigade and the first intake of 8 young men and women were voted in just a week ago.

Mr Piccolo commended the Brigade for introducing the cadet program as it gives young people (aged 12-18) the opportunity to serve their communities and learn valuable new skills.

“The cadet program will help keep the brigade sustainable.”

“Listening to the cadets last night was a complete joy as you could hear the passion and commitment for their community in their voices.”
