Work on the long awaited pedestrian crossing on Murray Street near the Gawler Central Railway Station should, subject to the weather, commence in mid-June and be completed by the end of the month.

Local Member Tony Piccolo said he was delighted that $100,000 had been put aside in the Responsive Road Safety Program for the project to be undertaken.

The works will also include the installation of kerb ramps, handrails and associated pavement Marking. Mr Piccolo said the need for a pedestrian crossing along Murray Street near the Gawler Central railway station had been raised with him some years ago and he had continued to lobby for its construction.

Willaston resident Ms Karen Farrell was one of the first residents to raise the issue. Planning for the refuge was delayed while new traffic arrangements for the Northern Shopping Centre [Coles] were under consideration. Over the years Mr Piccolo has raised the matter with successive Transport and Road Safety Ministers to ensure the need for a pedestrian refuge was not forgotten.

“This is a very busy section of road in our local area and the pedestrian refuge will mean there is a much safer environment for people to cross Murray Street near Coles.”

Mr Piccolo said that he had been advised the majority of the work will be undertaken between 9 am and 4 pm to minimise disruption to traffic while any resurfacing will take place between 9 pm and 6 am.

For the safety of workers and drivers, a 25 km/hr speed limit will apply during the construction of the pedestrian crossing. During night works Murray Street will be closed between Cowan Street and Murray Road with clearly signed detours in place.

Mr Piccolo said while he appreciated the works would cause inconvenience for drivers there will be significant improvements for pedestrian safety in the locality as a result of the new pedestrian crossing. Adjacent residents and business owners will receive notification of the pending works this week.
