The Roseworthy-Hewett Kiwanis Club hosted the National convention for the Kiwanis Clubs of Australia last week.
Over 150 delegates from across Australia and some from overseas gathered at the Sage Hotel in Adelaide to hear reports on the work of various clubs and districts and to listen to a range of guest speakers including the South Australian Governor and the Commissioner of Police.
Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo delivered a speech to welcome all the delegates to the Australian National Convention. Mr Piccolo said the work undertaken by service clubs like the Kiwanis clubs was often underestimated or not properly understood by the general community.
“Last year Kiwanis members worldwide performed 18 million hours of voluntary work and invested over US $107 million in various community projects,” said Mr Piccolo.
“Kiwanis’ one child one community at a time model is a worthy and noble cause and a sound approach to supporting children and families.” “Early intervention programs supported by Kiwanis make a huge difference to the lives of children and families.
Mr Piccolo was particularly pleased to welcome Ms Pilar ‘Efi” Tabuena Taylor who is the Lt Governor of the Kiwanis International Philippine District 3A which has a sister club relationship with the Roseworthy-Hewett Club.
Mr Piccolo told the delegates that he was very fortunate to have two Kiwanis clubs in his electorate, the Kiwanis Club of Gawler being the other.
“I am very fortunate to have very good working relationships with both clubs. I am an annual supporter of the Gawler Club’s Terrific Kids program and can vividly recall attending the Charter meeting for the formation of the Roseworthy-Hewett Club.
Mr Piccolo acknowledged the presence of International President Dewey Smith and Australian Governor, Bill Skully at the Convention. It was the 48th National Convention the Kiwanis have held in Australia.Darwin will host the next one.
