Small businesses in the Light electorate will benefit in many ways from the State Government’s new energy plan announced during the week, according to local Member of Parliament Tony Piccolo.

Mr Piccolo said the local businesses he has spoken with during the week have welcomed the new energy plan. They have told him that it will significantly improve the reliability of our power supply and help prevent load shedding which has hurt residents and businesses alike.

“We are building our own gas-fired generator to provide emergency back-up power to help prevent against load-shedding, and we are building Australia’s biggest battery to capture energy from the wind and sun and dispatch it around-the-clock,” Mr Piccolo said.

“By delivering a more reliable power supply businesses can confidently plan for the future.”

“By boosting local generation and increasing competition our plan is about taking charge of our energy future,” he said.

“Increasing competition will place downward pressure on the price of power. This will help the bottom line of small business and give them greater capacity to grow and employ more people.”

“The harsh and cruel reality is that our national electricity Market is broken and we can no longer rely on private Market operators to do what is in the best interests of South Australians.

“We are also providing further incentives for greater production of gas. It will become more affordable for generators to supply and thus place downward pressure on power prices.

”The construction of the new state owned gas fired generator and the battery project, combined with greater gas exploration, will create more job opportunities in our state.

“These projects will also provide opportunities for contracts and work for small businesses along the supply chain.”

“This is a plan for the future. It helps protect our environment so our children and grandchildren can have clean air, but at the same time delivering new jobs, opportunities for businesses and a reliable power supply,” he said.

“Overall these policies will put downward pressure on power prices for businesses and improve the security of our State’s grid.”
