Despite recent calls by the Liberal Party, the Gawler Council selected the route for the Gawler East Link Road originally outlined by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure last Tuesday. The Liberal Party sought to throw a spanner in the works in calling for the GELR to be immediately extended through to Tiver Road along Bentley Road. Mr Piccolo said while he supports the extension of the GELR to Tiver, he does not support the Bentley Road route suggested by the Gawler Council and the Liberal Party. “The recent entry into the debate by the Liberal Party at the 11th hour has been both clumsy and destructive,” Mr Piccolo said. “Unfortunately the campaign by the Liberal Party appears to be opportunistic. “It appears that they don’t care about who they hurt as they seek to score cheap political points. “The actions of the Liberals suggests that they don’t have an understanding of local issues, particularly those of the residents along the Bentley Road corridor. “The petition has had an immediate impact and created a great deal of distress and anxiety in the effected community. “The sad thing is that it was so unnecessary and re-activated the Bentley Road Action Group (BRAG) who strongly oppose the Liberal push. “Perhaps if the Liberals had some local knowledge they would understand that the people in Evanston Park support the extension of the GELR to Tiver based on a new alignment further east. “I have made suggestions to the Council on a number of occasions about how a different route could benefit local residents and the wider community; unfortunately they have failed to act on this. “It is important for the Council to immediately reject the Liberal Party’s position. “The Council really need to get a new mindset on this important issue. “Should the Council fail to act on this then they will be seen as complicit in adding to the harm already created by the Liberals,” he said.
