The main street of Gawler has become safer following the installation of additional signage aimed at protecting residents and motorists at two busy intersections.
After multiple incidents of trucks crashing into pedestrian lights at the Murray Street and Lyndoch Road intersection, investigations by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) revealed that the issue stemmed from vehicles turning incorrectly rather than excessive speed.
To address this, DIT has installed new signage indicating the tightness of the corner, helping drivers navigate the turn more safely.
The department is also exploring alternative solutions to eliminate the need for the signal pole altogether, aiming to provide a signalised crosswalk without the pole.
At the Cowan Street and Murray Street intersection, near misses due to motorists failing to stop for pedestrians have prompted the installation of Left Turn Give Way to Pedestrian & Cyclists signage to improve safety.
Tony Piccolo MP welcomed the changes, highlighting the concerns raised by residents.
"These issues have been brought up by locals time and time again," said Mr Piccolo.
“It's reassuring to see that action is finally being taken to make our streets safer for everyone—pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike."
"While these signs are a step in the right direction, we need to keep working towards long-term solutions that ensure safety without relying on temporary fixes.”
