Gawler is set once again to have a month full of events and activities to celebrate its built and cultural history during May.

Last week, Gawler Mayor, Karen Redman launched the 4th official program detailing 24 events and activities which showcase the depth and breadth of Gawler’s continuing history.

Mayor Redman said the “sharing [of] our stories and welcoming visitors so that they can learn more about what makes this place, Gawler, so important in the history of South Australia.”

“The Cultural Heritage Centre will have the official opening of our new exhibition ‘Threads of Life’ on May 1st. I hope you will all be able to join us as we delve into stories of births, deaths and marriages in Gawler,” said Mayor Redman.

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo said the History Month program for Gawler has a range of events to pique the senses of anyone who has an interest in any parts of Gawler’s history.

“This year the program also extends to Roseworthy, where there is the opportunity to visit Roseworthy Agricultural College and enjoy two different exhibitions-the first in ‘Made in Gawler’ highlighting locally manufactured agricultural machinery, equipment, and artefacts, and the second is an exhibition from the Adelaide University Collection,” said Mr Piccolo.

“The Made in Gawler exhibition brings to life Gawler’s industrial history from the 19th and 20th centuries, while the Roseworthy Collection will enable visitors to have a walk down memory lane”.

The two Roseworthy exhibitions have been made possible by the University of Adelaide Roseworthy Campus in partnership with the Gawler Machinery Restorers Club, the Roseworthy Old Collegians Association, and the Office of Tony Piccolo MP.

Other events include:

• The National Trust will be hosting a presentation from Allen Tiller on ‘Gawler’s Dark History’.

• The Gawler History Team will present Helen Hennessy speaking in the History of Goose Island.

• The Church of the Transfiguration and St George’s Church will both be having Open Days

• Journalist Rosemary Cadden is coming to the Civic Centre to speak about her recreation of the epic journey of the explorer John  McDouall Sturt.

• Professor Benjamin Mountford is visiting from Victoria to provide a more in depth understanding of the gold rushes and its effect on South Australia.

Mayor Redman thanked all the members of the Gawler Heritage Network for their involvement with this brochure and their support of the South Australian History Festival
