The Gawler and Surrounds Women’s Health Action Group celebrated their 10th anniversary last week with a cake cutting ceremony at the Gawler Women’s Health Centre (16th August).
The GASWHAG core aims are caring for the health and well-being of women accessing the Centre, using the skills and knowledge of various health professionals and a team of committed volunteers. Ms Gaye Harden, one of the founding members of the Group, spoke of the achievements the group has celebrated over the past 10 years, and in particular, the establishment of the Gawler Women’s Health Centre.
“What an amazing journey this has been for me and the GASWHAG members” Ms Harden said.
“10 years of meeting and sharing with so many lovely people. I have learnt so much and I appreciate this, with all its good bit s and bad bits; that’s life.
“I believe that GASWHAGS have value added life, joy, healthier actions, attitudes and colour to this Centre” she said. Member for Light, Tony Piccolo, reflected on the Centre’s official opening by Ms Judy Gillett-Ferguson in September 2010.
“Ms Gillett-Ferguson’s speech described the concept of a women’s health centre in Gawler as a twinkle in Gaye Harden’s eye” Mr Piccolo said.
“Despite a few labour pains, it was a relatively safe and easy birth due to the excellent support of so many midwives” he quoted.
Special thanks were made to Andrew Glen from the Gawler Health Foundation for their fundraising efforts and co-ordinating the building crews.
Many of the group who attended the birthday celebrations were current or past volunteers and clients of the Centre.
The Group are always looking to recruit committee members to help run the Centre and more information can be obtained by contacting Gaye Harden on 8522 3518.
